Gallery 217 hosted the opening of “Hidden,” a guest exhibition of artist Nathalie Alfonso’s unseen pieces.
The exhibition, which opened on Oct. 2, will run until Nov. 7. It shows videos of art she created in 2020.
“This is the first time that video work that I produced in 2020 is being curated,” Alfonso said. “I really wanted them to curate an exhibition of works that I’ve never shown before.”
Students in the Museum Studies and Gallery Curation class curated the gallery. The class spent more than a month working with Alfonso to plan, prepare and present the exhibition from start to finish.
“I never really realized all the extra work that goes into curation and museum studies,” said Bria Manning-Floyd, senior Art + Design major. “In this class, I really realized all the brainstorming, the attention to detail and honestly, just the foresight that goes into creating an exhibition and working in a gallery like this.”
The Guest Artist Exhibition is an annual fall tradition for students in the class to gain practical experience in gallery management and curation.
Robin Cooper, dean of the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, said students learning and applying gallery creation is the best way to gain experience.
“I think we’re always looking for new ways for students to not just be receiving information but to apply it themselves in real world contexts,” Cooper said.
