Attention Spans Are Shrinking Fast

In 2015, Microsoft Canada conducted a study on consumer attention spans. It found that the average consumer’s attention span has decreased from 12 seconds in 2000 to eight seconds in 2013. Most consumers will swipe away from the media if it does not immediately grab their attention. In a podcast from the American Psychological Association dated February 2023, psychologist Dr. Gloria Mark, stated that the average attention span on any screen was found to be 47 seconds in the past few years. When this study was first conducted in 2004, it was reported to last 150 seconds, or approximately two and a half minutes. Dr. Mark attributes this issue to people’s energy levels and lack of self-control. Nova Southeastern University student Raul Perez, senior Art + Design major, discussed in an interview his experience with this topic.
